Pedalite 360 Degree Pedal Lights now available at all Leisure Lakes Bicycle Stores

24 September 2007 - Leisure Lakes Bikes, one of the UK’s leading bike retailers has signed an agreement with Pedalite International Ltd, to stock the company’s unique battery-free pedals with integrated lighting in its seven UK retail outlets and on its website - www.leisurelakesbikes.com. Customers can purchase Pedalites at the recommended retail price of £34.99 per pair; an accompanying toe clip will also be available from October at £6.99.

Based on patented technology, Pedalites are powered by the cyclist’s and bicycle’s existing kinetic energy and the lights come on as soon as the cyclist starts pedalling. They harvest and store this kinetic energy causing the lights to stay on for up to five minutes after the pedalling stops. This means the cyclist can always be seen even when freewheeling or waiting at a junction, which according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (2005), is where 75% of accidents take place and cyclists need to be seen from the side.

Pedalites protect cyclists from accidents by providing 360 degree visibility for bikes, enabling motorists can see them from up to 1km away, from any angle, even the side.

Easy to fit and requiring no maintenance, they provide additional bike lighting and are an essential back up if other battery powered lights fail or are accidentally not turned on. They are the perfect solution to the perennial problem of the invisible cyclist.

Chris Noy, director at Leisure Lakes Bikes said, “We were very impressed when we first saw Pedalites in action – it is a fantastic product. It is entirely self-contained and requires no batteries which makes it stand out. We believe that its green credentials will prove popular with customers, who are keen to add battery-free lighting to their bikes.”

“The product provides a much needed solution to one of the major challenges faced by every cyclist - how to work out how much battery is left in their lights and avoid being stranded in the dark. Even if all other battery-operated lights run out, bikes fitted with Pedalites will always be seen by motorists ensuring the cyclist’s safety. We sell a great deal of reflective clothing because on-the-road safety is a major concern for all our customers. We are highly confident the product will prove a hit with our customers.”

Tony Doyle, MBE and World Champion cyclist commented “Cycling has never been so popular. This year saw the excitement of the Tour de France starting in London. We are seeing record numbers of people taking up cycling because it’s fun, good for health and environmentally friendly. Bikes fitted with pedal lights seem wider to the motorist and cars give them a wider berth, decreasing their chances of accidents and wobble as cars or lorries pass at speed.”

With no batteries required; pedal lights have excellent ‘green’ credentials and will appeal to those who are environmentally conscious. Globally 15 billion batteries are thrown away each year; in the UK alone that is over 20,000 tonnes of batteries. The dangers and implications of disposing up to 300 million batteries in landfill sites each year are well documented. Pedalite pedals are protecting the environment by eliminating batteries and are always on to help protect cyclists.

Simon Theobald, managing director of Pedalite said, “Leisure Lakes Bikes is one of the UK’s best known bike retailers. We are delighted it will stock Pedalites in all its stores, online and provide marketing support by featuring the product in its brochures. With dark nights drawing in – attention must be paid to bike lighting and Pedalites provide worry-free lighting for cyclists, which will ensure they are never invisible to cars. Working with Leisure Lakes Bikes will enable us to reach out to a wider customer pool. We are confident the partnership will be mutually beneficial and that the product will be a success.”

About Pedalite International

Pedalite International Ltd offers unique battery-free pedal lights that harvest and store the energy that a cyclist uses enabling the lights to stay on for up to five minutes after the pedalling stops such as when freewheeling or waiting at a junction.

Now used by thousands of cyclists in over 22 countries, Pedalite 360 degree pedal lights help to protect the cyclist with always on essential side lighting, protect the environment by eliminating highly caustic battery waste and save money by using the kinetic energy generated by turning the pedals rather than requiring batteries to be purchased over and over again.

In July 2007 Pedalite was acquired by the Mpower1 Group of companies (www.mpower1.com); a major business development organisation, which has increased investment, accelerated product development, attracted celebrity endorsement for Pedalite products, initiated a major marketing campaign and underwritten the future of Pedalite.

Tony Doyle MBE, twice World Pursuit Champion and four times European Track Champion is an ambassador and spokesperson for Pedalite International Ltd. Tony will be promoting the pedal lights at exhibitions, cycling shows and through cycling clubs, retail outlets and in schools throughout the UK, highlighting the part they play in cycling safety. As spokesperson, Tony also plays a key role in helping explain, through the media, the importance to cyclists of using Pedalite Pedals.
