On Your Bike adds battery-free Pedalites to bikes to improve cycling safety

13 September 2007 - On Your Bike, the government-backed scheme that offers tax free bikes to UK employees, has signed a partnership agreement with Pedalite International Ltd, which will see the company’s unique battery-free pedals offered as a standard accessory on every bike acquired through the scheme. The 360 degree pedal lights provide always-on lighting for bikes and protect cyclists by ensuring they can be seen clearly by motorists on their daily commutes to and from work.

With immediate effect, On Your Bike will include Pedalite pedals in its salary sacrifice schemes as a standard option on all cycles at the recommended retail price of £34.99. The lights can be acquired online at www.onyourbike.gb.com and will also be available soon in participating ‘On Your Bike’ retailers. Toe clips will also be available from October retailing at £6.99 per pair.

Steve Bennett, Bike to Work Co-ordinator commented, “Pedalites are a fantastic product and On Your Bike is thrilled to be first to market offering Pedalites to our scheme members. Fitting Pedalites to bikes, will add a layer of security for all our members. Employers will have peace of mind that the safety of their employees is increased when they are cycling to and from work.”

T“The product has excellent safety credentials, supported by the fact that they are used by the UK emergency services and endorsed by former World Champion cyclist and ardent safety campaigner, Tony Doyle. With no battery required, they are completely hassle-free and environmentally friendly, which will greatly appeal to our members. In addition, like all cycling accessories acquired through On your Bike – a Tax and National Insurance rebate will be received by members,” he added.

Simon Theobald, managing director of Pedalite said, “On Your Bike is a fabulous tax saving scheme which makes cycling accessible and affordable for everyone. The government’s move to encourage cycling for health and environmental reasons is great news and we are delighted to partner with the UK’s premier scheme to help move the Green Transport agenda forward.”

“There has been a huge rise in the numbers of cycling commuters in recent years, but an equal rise in the number of cars on the road, putting cyclists at risk particularly at dusk, in the early morning or if the weather suddenly changes, causing the sky to darken. Pedalites ensure cyclists are never without lights and can always be viewed clearly by motorists, which greatly enhances their safety,” he added.

Former World Champion cyclist Tony Doyle stated, “One of the biggest fears for any cyclist is when cars come too close to them they think they will be knocked off. However, cars tend to give bikes fitted with the pedal lights a wider birth, decreasing the chances of accidents and wobble as lorries pass at speed – this is an excellent cycling safety product that the market has needed for some time.”

Pedalites will be available to all On Your Bike scheme members, which includes, The RSPB, Shelter UK, National Trust, The Office of National Statistics and several local authorities including, Rotherham Borough Council and East Dunbartonshire Council.

About Pedalite International

Pedalite International Ltd offers unique battery-free pedal lights that harvest and store the energy that a cyclist uses enabling the lights to stay on for up to five minutes after the pedalling stops such as when freewheeling or waiting at a junction.

Now used by thousands of cyclists in over 22 countries, Pedalite 360 degree pedal lights help to protect the cyclist with always on essential side lighting, protect the environment by eliminating highly caustic battery waste and save money by using the kinetic energy generated by turning the pedals rather than requiring batteries to be purchased over and over again.

In July 2007 Pedalite was acquired by the Mpower1 Group of companies (www.mpower1.com); a major business development organisation, which has increased investment, accelerated product development, attracted celebrity endorsement for Pedalite products, initiated a major marketing campaign and underwritten the future of Pedalite.

Tony Doyle MBE, twice World Pursuit Champion and four times European Track Champion is an ambassador and spokesperson for Pedalite International Ltd. Tony will be promoting the pedal lights at exhibitions, cycling shows and through cycling clubs, retail outlets and in schools throughout the UK, highlighting the part they play in cycling safety. As spokesperson, Tony also plays a key role in helping explain, through the media, the importance to cyclists of using Pedalite Pedals.

This winter Pedalite 360 degree Pedal Lights are available at selected high street bicycle retailers and online direct from Pedalite at www.pedalite.com and many other online stores for just £34.99 along with Pedalite toeclips for just £6.99.
