Pedalite showcases new battery-free safety lights for Equestrians at BETA

stand of its UK distributor, Equestrian Supplies
Ltd (M6.1), at BETA International 2010,
Birmingham NEC from 21st to 23rd February.
Pedalite’s lighting products, Anklelite/Armlite, Baglite and the Baglite Light harness are designed to improve equestrian safety and help eliminate accidents by ensuring equestrians are seen clearly in a yard, by other riders and by motorists, any time day or night and from up to 1km away. The products, which have all been shortlisted for the BETA Innovation awards and may be seen in the BETA new products section, have the unusual ability of being more visible the further away from them you are!
Anklelite/Armlite
 The solar-powered Anklelite/Armlite provides environmentally-friendly, visibility, at windscreen/wing mirror height, to keep horse riders seen and safe all year around. It is an ultra lightweight (about 80gms or the same weight as a box of matches), weather resistant, elasticated velcro lighting strap that can be worn over riding boots or on the arm. The Anklelite/Armlite is so cost-effective it pays for itself in one season through the elimination of buying replacement batteries.
Baglite
Baglite is an innovative solar-powered lighting system fitting over any size backpack the rider might be wearing when on or off their horse. It uses a unique 360 degree floodlight module in order to ‘light up’ the rider’s upper body. There is a single red floodlight at the back and two white floodlights at the front attached to straps that fit together to form the shoulder straps of a backpack.
New Baglite Light Harness
In response to customer demand, Pedalite has also launched a new Baglite Light harness which is a high visibility fluorescent tabard with special fastenings to connect the Baglite product to the tabard, just as if it was a backpack. However, the Baglite is detachable giving riders a choice to wear the light harness tabard or the Baglite attached to a backpack.
These weather and impact resistant products recharge in sunlight or ordinary household light, with a full charge giving at least six hours of light when set to flashing mode, providing a light to be seen by at any time needed. The flashing lights have been rigorously tested on young and nervous horses that very quickly became acclimatised to the lights or showed no reaction
Product benefits
For years horse riders have relied on ‘passive safety’ products, such as fluorescent and bright coloured clothing, to be seen. This kind of reflective clothing (passive safety) requires someone or something else to shine a light onto it to work properly by “reflecting” the light back to the source. Lighting, on the other hand, is active safety as it will always be seen whatever the conditions and actions of others and is the perfect complement to passive safety.
Equestrians are beginning to realise the need for lighting even during daylight hours, not just at dawn or dusk. Riding under trees, bridges or through the shadows of stable/buildings or clouds changes how well horse and rider are seen. The lens on these Pedalite products make the lights appear brighter the further away you are in daylight, shadow and darkness. There are lights to "see-by" and then there are "see-me" lights which are lights to be "seen-by". Pedalite lights are "see-me" lights that help ensure users are "seen-by" others from both short and long distances, for example, at dawn or dusk the lights can be seen from up to 1km away.
